Ru: we should have known when we walked into Bishkek’s Movie Bar, it wasn’t exactly our kind of place. Plush and glamourous with the most massive glitterball we’ve even seen hanging over us like the sword of Damacles, the clientele were mostly petite Kyrgyz girls dressed the kind of cocktail dresses, Brits call ‘twinkle-skimmers’ and heels so high, they couldn’t do much more than totter. They also had a sign on the door proudly proclaiming they used ‘face control’ when letting people in. Much tucking in of shirts and flattening down cowlicks among us. Our support band played funky covers, venturing into the ‘rock’ of Tina Turner and that seemed to challenge them. What
would they think of us? Not much. We played our first set of seven songs to a bare floor, apart from our faithful, sexy dancer Jamelia (see previous post) and the boys of the support band, who later asked us for autographs! Unperturbed and even encouraged by the awesome sound system, we took to the stage for a second set, only to be told by the manager to leave! Laughing, we played our cover of Britney Spears’ ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ to many grins from the people at the bar. Later they told us, ‘we think you’re good, it’s just not your place.’ You can say that again!
